Operation Moshtarak: Taking and Holding Marjah

This Backgrounder is the second installment in a series of reports analyzing the battle for Marjah in Helmand province.

Introduction

Operation Moshtarak is the largest joint operation of the war thus far. The operation is taking place in southern Helmand province, one of the focal points of General McChrystal’s strategy where Afghan and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) will look to seize the momentum from the Taliban.
